Canada Adventures: Snow, Blueberries,Wilderness, Music …

As October begins, it’s almost time for Thanksgiving — Thanksgiving in Canada, that is.

That has me thinking about the stories of Canada adventures we’ve shared with you, experiences you may not have thought of exploring.

Stories of a range of top Canada adventures to enjoy:

First about that Thanksgiving: if you are used to thinking of the more widely known Thanksgiving stories of the US celebration, this could be a Canada adventure in itself.

Celebrated on the secondt Monday in October (and usually across the Friday to Sunday preceding it), it’s a time of gathering with family, sure, and football, maybe. Depending of where you are what’s on the table may be familiar or quite different. The history differs too.

Kristin arrived for afternoon tea in Victoria, which is in British Columbia in Canada’s far west, by seaplane, a Canada adventure in itself. The meal was full of unexpected Canada adventures too, as she explains in the story you’ll find by following that link.

Recently the town of Kelowna and other parts of the Okanagan Valley, also in British Columbia, have been in the news because of wildfires; at this writing they are welcoming visitors back to enjoy food including Ambrosia apple and roasted squash soup and to explore the area’s wine region.

Liz visited those wineries and she also had a different sort of Canada adventure, which involved snakes, spiders, and legends.

In Alberta, Shelia had several Canada adventures visiting the Silver Skate festival in Edmonton, not least of which was that’s she’s based in central Texas and central Alberta was snow covered at the time of her visit.

Snow was also part of one of my Canada adventures in Alberta, a visit to the usually busy town of Banff around Saint Patrick’s Day a few years back. I was there to see a friend who was giving a concert as well as to explore the town, and found the snowy quiet in Banff at that time of year enhanced my Canada adventures.

Cape Breton Island, the northern part of the province of Nova Scotia in Atlantic Canada, is a place where mountains meet sea and where cultures including First Nations, Acadian, Gaelic, and others meet. One of the ways those cultures meet on Cape Breton is through music.

That is celebrated especially each October through the Celtic Colours International Festival, as Cape Breton artists along with musicians from Ireland, Scotland, England, the US, and all across Canada join up to celebrate. Plenty of room for Canada adventures there.

At the Celtic Colours Festival this year, there will be 49 concerts. If you’ll not be making to Cape Breton, often one concert each evening (the festival is on this year from 6 though 14 October) is available on line, too.

There will be more than 200 community events also, including nature walks, talks, hands on arts events, dances, music sessions, along with art exhibits, farmers’ markets, and meals from soup to seafood to tea and cakes to turkey and trimmings.
