Trash and treasures in Mount Dora, Florida

A Fiestaware display at Renninger’s Florida (Scarborough photo)For those who like to find treasures, there are flea markets across the U.S. that rarely disappoint.

A few of the biggies: Brimfield in Massachusetts, Canton Trade Days in Texas, the Rose Bowl Flea Market in California, the Southern multi-state World’s Longest Yard Sale, and I’ve recently been told that the Santa Fe Flea Market in New Mexico will “blow your mind.”

In central Florida, thousands of people make regular pilgrimmages to the gingerbready town of Mount Dora for Renninger’s Twin Markets Flea Market.

You can go every weekend, but the next major event is scheduled for December 15-16, 2007, so I thought I’d tell you about it now if you’d like to make plans.

On the day that I visited, I wore myself out just in the outdoor section and never made it through the building where there was apparently even more stuff.

I left with a bunch of goodies and didn’t spend that much money.

The haul included some Fiesta and Fire King dishware, a refurbished 1930s dial telephone, some neat old magazines, a framed print of a baseball player (BoSox’s Carl Yastrzemski) for my husband and some 1920s-1930s kitchen and pharmacy stuff that just looked cool.

It’s on a lake (part of a chain connecting with the Intracoastal Waterway and Atlantic Ocean) with a compact downtown central area, lots of nice eateries and historic lodging like the 1883 Lakeside Inn.

If flea markets don’t interest you but the idea of Mount Dora is appealing, look at upcoming events for the community and pay them a visit.
