Four years of travel stories you won’t find anywhere else

Happy Fourth Birthday Perceptive Travel Blog (courtesy dieter_weinelt on Flickr CC)Happy Fourth Birthday to us at Perceptive Travel Blog!

Yes, on March 21, 2007 we launched this blog as part of the Perceptive Travel webzine.

Says editor Tim Leffel,

Perceptive Travel set out to be a different kind of webzine, one that ignored ‘the rules’ of online publishing and put out quality narrative writing by creative book authors. In turn I wanted the blog to be different too: instead of joining the sea of top-10 list posts, ‘best beaches,’ and other disposable travel writing fare, we set out to focus on quirky places and stories that you wouldn’t find anywhere else. I think we’ve succeeded and thankfully, over 1,800 RSS subscribers agree.”

From the jumble of Don Quijote stores in Japan, to space geekery in New Mexico, to finding silver linings in Oslo, Norway, we continue to cover the globe with an eye for the striking, the unusual and the thought-provoking.

I still remember Tim’s call for contributors in early 2007 on the Travelwriters.com BBS; he said that among other qualifications, he was looking for the sorts of people who had blogging experience but who also had piles of books-in-progress on their nightstand.

After a look over at my own growning nightstand full of books at varying stages of reading progress, I thought, “Wow, maybe he means someone like me….” After a brief exchange of emails and sending links to my work, I found myself writing for the blog along with Antonia Malchik in New York (we call her Nia) and Steve Davey in the UK. I’d never met either in person but it did not seem to matter – we chattered in the comments of each other’s posts and popped emails back and forth with thoughts and questions.

Circumstances changed, people came and went. Nia and Steve left to pursue other interests, and Liz, Alison and Brian came in, with Kerry and her musical insights as the most recent addition (did you catch her post on the Bahrain and Scotland musical connection?) Again, of all of my fellow authors I’ve only managed to briefly meet Alison and Tim in person, but it’s never mattered. We hear each other’s now-familiar voices both in the posts we create and our periodic conference calls on Skype, where we yammer away and wander off-topic until Tim good-naturedly herds us back in to do business.

It’s a special opportunity to be given the freedom  to write about what fascinates me, what nags at me and what makes me want to throw things, and no one ever says, “That’s too obscure” or “No one will care about that.”

Thanks to all of our readers for being with us, cheering and commenting along the way….and to all of you who thrilled at my post about seeing the world’s longest grain elevator in Hutchinson, Kansas….well, you’re in a particularly special club. :)

We’ll be doing two things this week – celebrating our anniversary with posts and giveaways, and supporting one of our own writers, Christchurch NZ resident Liz Lewis who has suffered through more than her fair share of earthquakes recently. The Blog for New Zealand project March 21-23 (Blog4NZ on Facebook and hashtag #Blog4NZ on Twitter) gives us a chance to talk about Liz’s country and show our support for her and her fellow Kiwis.

Blog anniversary giveaways include an “Austin pack” (two music compilation CDs and an Austin music lover’s T-shirt, courtesy the Austin Convention and Visitor’s Bureau,) a copy of Tim Leffel’s The World’s Cheapest Destinations guidebook or one of the short-sleeved versions of our comfy Perceptive Travel T-shirt from our Travel Tease store.

All you have to do to have a chance for one of our prizes is leave a comment on this post.  Yep, that’s it!

We very much appreciate your readership, your comments and your support over the past four years – may we all enjoy many more posts full of unique and fun travel stories.

UPDATE:  And by using Random.org to pick, the giveaway winners are….

**  Birthday Present One (the Austin pack) – pam

**  Birthday Present Two (Cheapest Destinations guide) – Dominique

**  Birthday Present Three (Perceptive Travel T-shirt) – Deb

We’ll be contacting the winners for mailing info, and THANK YOU so much to everyone who commented and sent us kind wishes.

ALSO: What a nice surprise: TripBase just selected us as one of their 2011 Environmental Blog award winners. Thanks for the recognition of our efforts to support sustainable travel!

Stalking Great Travel Stories (on Blogs)

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

Today, we at Perceptive Travel blog got the news that we’re finalists in the journal Creative Nonfiction’s narrative blog contest. Check out the story that was submitted, Antonia’s How Sturdy is Your Sick Bag, which manages to be funny, gross and profound all at the same time.

It just so happens that I’ve been thinking more than usual about terrific travel narratives since I’m presenting at TBEX this weekend on travel writing on How to Up Your Game.  (I’ll be your non-legendary writer representative on the panel, what what!)

So I’ve taken this as an opportunity to slough off all my other projects and spend hours upon hours reading travel blogs.

Since one of the projects I’ve slacked on is… well, my weekly missive here… that means you’re not getting any narrative from me today.

So instead I thought I’d share a few of my finds. Herewith are great travel pieces that I loved reading, along with a couple I’ve had bookmarked for a few years. I’ll be talking about what characterizes great travel writing in my talk , and will reference many of these and probably a few more — if you search #tbex10 or #tbex on Twitter on Saturday you can follow along.

Perceptive Travel’s Sheila Scarborough Wins SXSW Social Media Award

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

Looks like it’s a winning season for the Perceptive Travel writers.

First there was Tim Leffel with his First Prize  NATJA  Award in the category of Travel Writing on the Internet for a Perceptive Travel story  Unbalanced in the Sinking City.

He has since won a  Silver in the Destinations category of the annual Solas Awards sponsored by Travelers’ Tales Publishing for the same story as well as a Bronze Solas Award in the “Doing Good or the Kindness of Strangers” category for a story called The Collision (which was also awarded a  second prize in Transitions Abroad’s annual narrative travel writing contest). Talk about award winning!

Then there was  Alison Stein Wellner with her The Heat Seeker story (originally published on World Hum) being published in the Traveler’s Tales Best Women’s Travel Writing 2010 anthology due out this month.

sheilab150And now there is Sheila Scarborough with her newly won SXSWi Social Media Award at the recent South by Southwest Interactive (SXSWi) tech conference in Austin.

Given Sheila’s enthusiasm and energy in regards learning and teaching others, especially the tourism industry, about social media, this award is well deserved.  For Sheila’s take on social media, head on over to Sheila’s Guide to the Good Stuff and Tourism Currents.

Way to go Sheila. Hope you can hear the long distance clapping.

Perceptive Travel’s Tim Leffel and Alison Stein Wellner are Shining Stars

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

It’s not quite the Oscars but for travel writers winning a NATJA (North American Travel Journalist Association) award is big. Focusing on travel writing, photography and travel promotion submitted by travel journalists, travel magazines, public relations agencies and destination marketing organizations from the around, obviously, the North American countries of Canada, Mexico and the United States, the NATJA Awards honors the “best of the best”.

leffel_monkey200This year we were thrilled to learn that our own Tim Leffel, editor of Perceptive Travel magazine and guiding light for the Perceptive Travel blog, won a First Prize Award in the category of Travel Writing on the Internet.

His winning entry – Unbalanced in the Sinking City – a story published in the April ’09 edition of Perceptive Travel magazine. Check it out and see for yourself why it is awarding winning travel writing.

This isn’t the first time Tim has picked up NATJA for his travel writing and I’m sure it won’t be his last.

Tim, by the way, is in the process of writing a book on travel writing, hopefully sharing many of his tips on how not only how to create great travel writing but also how to get it published. I, for one, can’t wait to get a copy to read.

alison-eating-150x150And while Tim is busy winning awards, fellow Perceptive Travel blogger Alison Stein Wellner has been busy polishing up an excerpt of her The Heat Seeker story (originally published on World Hum) for Traveler’s Tales Best Women’s Travel Writing 2010 anthology due out this month.

Congrats Tim and Allison.

Can you hear me clapping and cheering all the way from New Zealand?
