You can see the grain elevator from the highway, and if you’re not up to speed about what’s really going on in there, it would be easy to drive on by and miss one of the more intriguing places in downtown Oklahoma City, Oklahoma – the Rocktown Climbing Gym inside (and outside) of a former skyscraper of agriculture.

Even if you’re like me and aren’t a climber, you may want to learn how after visiting. There are lessons available, and climbs of every sort of difficulty.

Look at the photo at the top of this post – see that red squarish thing with holds on it, to the left of the light beam?

That’s where some very skilled insane people climbers can somehow manage to hang like bats from the top of this particular silo, which is one of 16 in the complex.

Crazy fun for somebody out there, I’m sure….

On the day I visited, there were people of all ages inside, from a girl of about 12 to a man who looked to be in his 50′s or 60′s, all at varying distances from the bottom of their silo.

Temperatures inside Rocktown can get a little dicey, since it’s hard to heat or air-condition 16 humongous silos, but that simply replicates actual conditions outdoors for climbers, so no one seems to mind.

It’s always good when someone has your back when you’re up in the air, right? Look below for a few of the helpful and attentive belayers I saw on duty.

Here’s a climbing route for those days when you want more fresh air (or want to feel more like Spider Man.) Watch out for the famous wind whistling down the Plains, though….

Climbing routes are re-set all the time at Rocktown, and the holds get a bath in the process.

An exterior climbing route pays tribute to Hank Williams; you could hum his “Move It On Over” while going on up.
