It’s easy to remember to watch and look when you travel, and smells find their way into your brain whether you want them to or not. Touching things is often unavoidable (sorry, germophobes) and we all have to eat, so taste is always part of the trip.

What about sound?

I decided that I wasn’t paying enough attention to capturing a bit of the audio portions of my journeys, so I downloaded the SoundCloud app to my phone and started experimenting.

After spending time in Edmonton, Alberta I took the train to gorgeous Jasper in the Canadian Rockies. An afternoon of dogsledding was perfect for someone like me who doesn’t do any snow sports – I tried to shut up talking and LISTEN while I was there (hard to believe, I know.)

Here are two distinct sounds from that day: sled dogs in full canine chorus in anticipation of getting going again after a stop, and the very quiet shoosh-shoosh sound of the dogsled skis that carried me across miles of new-fallen snow.

What do you think?

Here are the dogs….they really got going when I walked toward them holding up my phone….direct link to the audio of 38 seconds

Here is the sound of the sled that was beneath me….the dogs go silent the minute they start running, so this is all you hear out in the woods….direct link to the audio of 32 seconds
