I really liked thought number 6!! You don't need 500 hotels to choose from in a single place, maybe a top 20 would be better?

I find myself compulsively making lists. I began the year creating a list of the Top 20 things I ate at sporting events. It's a good way to help remember the experiences, and useful to readers who can pick out those items that are relevant to them. More specifically, rankings (an editorialized list), are useful as a construct to incite debate.

Hi Allison,

Very interesting thoughts on lists. It's true. Lists have been glorified and also demonized, but they "work". Kind of like negative campaigning and long sales letters.

Maybe we aren't meant to understand why:)

I don't get why someone would spend their time being "irritated" by them though, as someone mentioned above. God, I hope someday my life gets so good that something as trivial as lists in travel writing would irritate me.

I loved the post though!
