why do we travel? Or like the song goes "does anybody know what we are looking for"?? Why do we consider travel a basic desire nowadays? I especially like how George Santayana puts it in The Philosophy of Travel: "We need sometimes to escape into open solitudes, into aimlessness, into the moral holiday of running some pure hazard, in order to sharpen the edge of life, to taste hardship, and to be compelled to work desperately for a moment at no matter what." Do we travel to lose ourselves or to find ourselves? In order to find the WHERE, WHEN or HOW to travel, we need to rediscover the pure pleasure of travels and the meaning of our own inner journey and rediscovery.

You'll get there! Just try to go before September -- I hear it's awesome watching the iceberg calves float by earlier in summer.

Thank you! I will never regret ending up on Newfoundland, and hope to go back sooner rather than later. It's such a beautiful place. I wonder if your mother missed it when she left?

I met Wayne Johnston at a literary seminar in Russia 3 years ago, where he was the writer-in-residence. He and his wife are some of the coolest people I've ever met, and he's such a great writer. Nice combination in a person :-)

Cheers,
Antonia

Newfoundland is where my mother grew up, but I've only ever visited St. John's area on the eastern side of Avalon. Grosse Morne has always been on my someday wish-list though. Newfoundland is such a great place to visit. I'm sorry your original plans were spoiled by 9/11 (to say the least), but I'm glad you landed somewhere as interesting to explore.

Also -- how cool that you met Wayne Johnston. I haven't read all his books, but I loved The Divine Ryans!

Enjoyed your post.
