I definitely recommend that all visitors to Hawaii, if they are not staying in some of the more historic hotels, at least visit them. But I would agree with some of the other commenters here that you don't need to wear a suit or anything to visit them... Sandals and bathing suit is quite common ;)

You have a problem with a guy picking up a pizza shirtless? Relax! After all, it's Hawaii, and it's perfectly normal.

you're very wrong about the "dress code" in the hotel. people go there to enjoy the island life and you can go anywhere you please dressed casually. many people come straight from the beach, even in the nice hotels, and don't need to find clothes to wear to walk around. i've walked through some of the nicest hotels in hawaii dripping wet with a surfboard under my arm only to be greeted with aloha's. have fun....no shirt, no shoes, no problem.

Thanks for trying to have the budget travel in mind. :) It's refreshing to hear about this even when all your expenses are paid for.

Haven't made it to Puerto Rico yet other than a short Navy port visit; hope to fix that someday.
