Ah, you leave out the joys of using the airplane lavatory with a small child (or more - I have 3 under 4). On one flight I was on the flight attendant would not let me change my infant daughter on the floor (I was in the bulkhead), but there was no changing table in the loo. How is a parent supposed to manage that?

You're both right -- it's torture no matter which way you look at it. I think the difference with kids is, as San Fran said, it's kind of self-torture. There's no escaping into a book -- and as you point out Sheila the food situation is kind of insane. If they really do start charging for toilet use I think it's time for a revolt.

That's okay, Sheila. This is why I write, so I don't simmer, and to recapture my sense of humor!

I should have commented sooner - flying has simply become misery unless you are alone, with an agreeable semi-adult companion or in 1st class. I flew to Hawaii and back with my 9-year-old son and he was fine, but let me tell you, I was not fine with being on a tiny plane ("more fuel efficient" chirped the flight attendant) and having to pay for food on a 5+ hour flight (ran out of Power Bars - my bad.)

Sorry Nia, wish I could come up with some soothing pabulum for you!

Thanks! I think I've caught up on non-screaming time now that we're home. But yeah, "how close can we push them to breaking point" seems to be the airline motto these days. I know, life in the airline business is hard. Making travel miserable just doesn't seem to be a good answer, though, in my opinion.
