What Sort of Travel Photographer Are You?

Sophia Dembling’s audio slideshow ‘My Travels, My Feet’ got me thinking about what type of photographer I am. In a nutshell, I’d say a bad one. I’ve never mastered the concept of apertures, focal lengths, and shutter speeds. Even point and shoot cameras have me puzzled. And yet, at last count, I own six cameras. There are two SLR film cameras (one that never really even made it out of the box), a film point and shoot, a digital SLR compact, and a digital point and shoot. And let’s not forget that the cell phone also has a camera.

With all that equipment, you’d think I’d be able to get in a decent shot or two. And occasionally I do. But for the most part, I still manage to cut of people’s heads, end up with crooked buildings, and shadows in all the wrong places.

But it doesn’t really matter, cause taking photos is fun.

By the way, that’s my ‘foot’ photo. But unlike Sophia’s feet photos, it wasn’t planned. Just another photo dud.

If you want to check out Sophia’s feet photos, then head over to World Hum. It’s definitely worth the trip.

Oh, I like that! It’s a good photo Liz.

I can be a rotten photographer, but since travel editors largely expect photos with articles now, I’ve been working on it. I tend to focus on offset landscapes, and buildings peeking out from odd angles. A secret passion is snapping people surging through the Moscow metro network, and I love doing winter shots with spindly trees and bare snow.

I like that photo a lot!
I have a fancy camera that I use almost entirely in point n shoot mode…

    You are both too kind.

Taking photos of people is always fun…I had a great time in NYC doing that, especially at Bryant Park where there was so many interesting people floating around.

  4. Sophie Says:

I’m kind of shy about taking pictures of people.

We like to think we take pretty snappy photos around our house, but when it comes down to it, we fail on all kinds of levels. iStockphoto rejected our application not once, but twice. And when we’ve done assignment work, we ship off dozens of what we think are swell pics, only to end up selling… three. Ten. Twenty for that guidebook, the rest are stock photo fillers. What the hell?

The eye of the beholder, friends. The eye of the beholder.

Pam, sorry to hear of rejection…but you got to admit, it’s fun trying…
