That was a great link, Kelly. I'll keep those items in consideration while on my mission (museums, cafes, bookstores, Asian food, pizza, bagels). She missed one city, though. Toronto has, I argue, one of the best combinations of coffee shops and bookstores on this continent. They might not be combined (and I do love Powell's in Portland, but everything about Portland is just heavenly except the job market), but there are lots of both, and all of high quality.

Cool, well just drop me an email sometime when you feel like catching up. No rush, I've just secured a tiny place to live in NYC, so the adventure is just beginning for me.

In the meantime, here's an interesting perspective from another conflicted New Yorker:

It's a deal, Kelly. Thanks! I like your life story/relationship. As an outsider, I can't always understand the push-pull problems of upstaters and Hudson Valley residents versus lifelong city residents, but I've been trying. I like the Hudson Valley, in general.

Obviously what I need is to meet more people like you, who have thought about NYC and can tell me what it is about the city that lights that special spark for millions. Who knows--by the end of it, I might love the city, too!

I'm from New York (the state - Hudson Valley, Rockland Cty.) and although I have never lived in the city, I currently work there and am preparing to move into Manhattan, just to give it a try, for once in my life.

However, I have harbored a love/hate relationship with NYC all my life...but because I am from the area (dad from Bronx, mom from Queens), I have finally decided in the past year to accept NYC as my home. (An Australian friend I made in Melbourne, who owns a condo in Park Slope and seemed way more "New York" than me, challenged me to "commit" to NYC. So for that, and other reasons, I'm giving it a go.)

I've traveled a bit too, and am always refreshed when I get away from NYC and experience what other cities around the world have to offer. It is the reason I will continue to travel throughout my life -- there are tons of other exciting, wonderful places in the world. But each time I return to NYC after an extended trip away, I always find myself blushing with a renewed love for the city -- because I find elements of all the places I have visited right here in my backyard. Sure, the place exhausts me -- but it doesn't seem possible to shut NYC out. Maybe I can't fathom that because of family ties to the area.

I won't try to convince you to love NYC, but I will surely read along to see what happens. I can suggest one cool indie bookstore on the upper west side that you may want to check out. I work there -- see my blog for the link, and if you decide to make a visit, please let me know. I'm sure we'd have lots to chat about over a coffee...or a bottle of wine :)
