You thought travel writing was bad?
Posted May 1st, 2007 by Antonia MalchikCarolyn at Wild Blue Yonder directed me to this posting at Danny Palmerlee’s travelburro website, where the Lonely Planet author gives a half-hour interview with the Talkin’ Travel show. You’d have to watch it to believe it. Suddenly the failings of many big glossies don’t seem so bad. How ’bout two well-meaning hosts asking some of the most (sorry to say) ignorant questions I’ve ever heard? Palmerlee works mostly in South America, and managed to deal well with questions like, “Isn’t Buenos Aires dangerous?” and “So they have cities that you’d fly into, like going to Europe?” That in addition to the host answering his mobile phone twice during the interview. I don’t want to be too mean. This couple seems not only nice but earnestly interested. It would have been nicer if their interest had extended to prepping for the interview by imbibing a little information beforehand. Still, they asked pleasant, leading questions about Palmerlee’s work and the environmental issues of travel, and left lots of room for him to talk at length and with enthusiasm.
