Here's a real winner of an ad I just spotted. The publication name has been removed to protect the guilty, but how balanced do you think these "articles" will be?!

"I'm looking to build strategic alliances with a select number of high-end PR firms that have 'extraordinary' destination clients to 'ghost write' travel pieces and illustrate each destination with beautiful color photography. [Lame magazine]'s reach and readership are second to none, and spotlighting your client will generate outstanding awareness from our readers who have unlimited buying power.

So true! A few years ago Tom Swick, editor of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel's travel section, wrote an excellent article for the Columbia Journalism Review ( read it here: http://archives.cjr.org/year/01/3/travel.asp) detailing the many specific reasons why current travel writing is so atrocious. Lack of negativity was near the top.

There is another place people can look for very good travel writing, at least in the States: literary journals, where acerbic wit and all negative aspects are appreciated as long as they tell a good story. And England's Granta has had some of the best travel essays in the last couple of decades.
